ABOUT THE ROLE

The Seafarer Certification team carries out a range of functions relating to the training and certification of international and domestic seafarers. The Head of Seafarer Certification is a pivotal leadership position responsible for a small team of maritime professionals who delivery accreditation services for Registered Training Organisations and ensure compliance with the Australia’s international obligations for the training and certification of seafarers. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the delivery of a nationally consistent training and certification program for Australia’s maritime industry.

You will be responsible for:

  • Manage Australia’s compliance with internationally recognised standards for training certification and watch-keeping, including co-ordination of Registered Training Organisations compliance, evaluation, and approval.
  • Lead the development and delivery of a nationally consistent final assessment / oral exams framework, and the training and development of examiners.
  • Lead the drafting of advice, reports and correspondence related to the certification and training of seafarers.
  • Lead initiatives aimed at ensuring AMSA’s ongoing compliance with its international obligations, and the efficient delivery of a nationally consistent seafarer licencing program.
  • Engaging with industry representative bodies, registered training organisations, and government organisations, on matters relating to the training and certification of seafarers.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

To be successful in this position, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • An in depth understanding of the regulatory frameworks relevant to the maritime industry, and experience in regulatory decision making, or similar and relevant experience,
  • Knowledge and understanding of Australia’s vocational education and training sector, with relevance to the maritime industry,
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to ‘translate’ complex regulatory and technical matters into plain English.
  • The ability to lead organisational change, supported by experience leading and managing a small team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven experience in developing new ways of working and generating innovative ideas to challenges.
  • In line with Attachment C of AMSA's Enterprise Agreement, candidates require an unlimited STCW Certificate of Competency as Master or Engineer Class 1 or a relevant degree, and significant industry experience appropriate to the duties and responsibilities of the position.
