ABOUT THE ROLE

This role will suit an experienced generalist lawyer with an interest in maritime safety and protecting the marine environment.  Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, the Senior Solicitor will proactively identify and manage legal risk while assisting AMSA’s staff understand and implement best legal practice in delivering AMSA’s key objectives. 

You will be responsible for:

  • providing independent written and oral legal advice on a range of complex corporate, regulatory and operational matters 
  • undertaking statutory interpretation and identifying practical regulatory outcomes 
  • supporting AMSA’s legislative drafting and information management functions 
  • ​supporting Court and Tribunal matters in which AMSA is a party or subject to discovery or other obligations 
  • promoting legal awareness in AMSA, including by delivering training and advising employees on relevant procedures that need to be considered to ensure the organisation upholds its legal obligations 
  • Provide other assistance to OLC as required.  
  • Commit to the AMSA Code of Conduct and Values.​ 

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

 To be successful in this position, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • ​​Tertiary level qualification in law, or comparable overseas qualification.  Ideally, candidates will have five years of post-admission legal experience.
  • ​Admission to practice as a legal practitioner in an Australian State or Territory and ability to acquire a practising certificate. 
  • ​Skills and experience in one or more relevant law discipline (refer to position description).
  • Analytical skills and good judgement, with the ability to develop practical solutions. 
  • ​Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex concepts across all organisational levels. 
  • ​Demonstrated ability to engage with, and build and sustain relationships with, internal and external stakeholders.  
  • ​Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities while delivering quality, timely outcomes.
