 ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Marine Inspector (MI), you will play a key role in supporting safe, seaworthy, and environmentally responsible operations in the domestic commercial vessel (DCV) sector. You will build strong relationships with stakeholders, assess vessel compliance, and contribute to AMSA’s commitment to maritime safety and protecting the marine environment.

As a Marine Inspector, you will:

  • Represent AMSA with professionalism, acting as an ambassador and sharing knowledge with industry stakeholders where appropriate
  • Support environmental protection and safety through a mix of regulatory inspections and educational activities
  • Work collaboratively with Port Marine Surveyors and Liaison Officers to ensure high-quality service delivery across the sector

You will be responsible for:

  • Conducting inspections and investigations to assess compliance with maritime safety, environmental, and related legislation, often across a broad geographical area
  • Carrying out compliance activities including preparing reports and issuing operational notices in line with AMSA’s compliance framework
  • Acting as a key AMSA contact on compliance matters and sharing information to promote a strong safety culture across the industry
  • Providing sound, informed advice while engaging constructively with industry and other stakeholders
  • Communicating proactively and motivating industry to improve safety outcomes
  • Assessing and processing applications within the domestic commercial vessel industry as required
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and demonstrating ongoing competence in fulfilling your responsibilities
  • Working independently within agreed work plans, delegations, and timeframes
  • Supporting broader Operations Division activities as directed by the Regional Manager
  • Upholding the AMSA Code of Conduct and Values in all aspects of your work.

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

To be successful in this position, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience working with Australian domestic commercial vessels
  • Demonstrated resilience and adaptability, with the ability to remain calm and solution-focused in dynamic or high-pressure environments
  • Proven ability to build strong, collaborative relationships across teams and actively contribute to a positive team culture
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with a focus on achieving mutually beneficial outcomes and resolving conflicts constructively
  • Sound judgement and a proactive approach to delivering results, managing risks, and adapting plans to meet evolving priorities
  • ​​A commercial maritime Certificate of Competency (minimum Master <35m (NC) or Marine Engine Drive Grade 1 (NC) or equivalent, whether valid or not, or accreditation as an AMSA Accredited Surveyor, or a relevant equivalent maritime qualification with substantial experience in a safety/compliance/risk management position in the maritime industry or demonstrated relevant regulatory safety/compliance/risk experience. 
  • ​Ability to hold and maintain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC). 
  • ​Hold and maintain a current driver’s licence
