About the Role

Reporting to the Principal Naval Architect, the Advisor Technical supports AMSA’s domestic vessel survey and certification functions, combining maritime technical knowledge with strong project management and organisational skills.

In this role you will:

  • Assess, recommend or approve lower-risk vessel certification and exemption applications within the role’s authority.
  • Assess equivalent solution and other exemption applications, seeking technical, legal and policy advice where required.
  • Provide accurate, timely and consistent technical advice to stakeholders.
  • Train and mentor the Certification team in technical assessments and recommendations.
  • Work with technical colleagues to maintain knowledge and consistency in assessment approaches and advice.
  • Lead improvements to policies and processes for domestic commercial vessels, with a focus on national consistency.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of national standards, legislation, work instructions and guidance.
  • Identify trends in industry feedback, applications and enquiries to inform improvements to standards, systems and guidance.
  • Develop and review survey-related material, including online content and webinars.

What We're Looking For

You will bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and/or equivalent work experience, preferably in a vessel or marine-related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated regulatory or compliance experience.
  • Knowledge of national and international laws, standards and conventions relevant to the domestic commercial vessel sector.
  • Relevant operational experience in the domestic maritime industry.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders and provide timely and accurate technical advice.
  • Demonstrated project and time management skills, with the ability to work remotely with limited supervision.
  • The ability to become accredited as a DCV Surveyor under the domestic commercial vessel National Law would be advantageous.
  • Behaviours aligned with One AMSA values and ways of working
