At Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), every role contributes to our mission to protect lives, support safe maritime operations, and safeguard Australia’s marine environment.

We are Australia’s national agency responsible for maritime safety, protection of the marine environment, and maritime and aviation search and rescue. We regulate vessel safety and seafarer qualifications, provide the infrastructure for safe navigation in Australian waters, and coordinate national search and rescue services. These outcomes are enabled by strong corporate, digital and specialist capabilities that support our operational work nationwide.

With around 500 employees across Australia, AMSA operates in a complex, highly regulated environment and offers meaningful careers with national reach and long-term impact. Learn more at amsa.gov.au.

About the Role

As a Marine Inspector, you will play a key role in supporting safe, environmentally responsible and compliant domestic commercial vessel operations. Combining your maritime expertise with strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, you will work closely with industry, government and other stakeholders to promote a positive safety culture, support compliance with maritime legislation, and contribute to safer outcomes for seafarers, communities and Australia's marine environment.

In this role you will:

  • Conduct inspections, investigations and compliance activities that support safe, compliant and environmentally responsible vessel operations.
  • Represent AMSA as a trusted regulator, building strong relationships and providing practical advice to industry and stakeholders.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through education, stakeholder engagement and proportionate regulatory action.
  • Work collaboratively across AMSA and with industry to deliver consistent, risk-based regulatory services and improve safety outcomes.
  • Exercise sound judgement while working independently to assess compliance, manage competing priorities and make informed regulatory decisions.

What We're Looking For

You will bring:

  • A commercial maritime Certificate of Competency (minimum Master <35m (NC) or Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 (NC), or equivalent), or accreditation as an AMSA Accredited Surveyor, or an equivalent maritime qualification with substantial experience in maritime safety, compliance, risk management or regulatory operations.
  • Experience working with Australian domestic commercial vessels or within a maritime safety, compliance or regulatory environment.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage, influence and build trust with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Resilience, sound judgement and the ability to remain effective in dynamic operational environments while making balanced regulatory decisions.
  • The ability to hold and maintain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC), if required, and a current driver's licence.
  • Behaviours aligned with One AMSA values and ways of working
