About AMSA - Work with Purpose

Safe Seas. Clean Seas. Saving Lives.

At Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), every role contributes to our mission to protect lives, support safe maritime operations, and safeguard Australia’s marine environment.

We are Australia’s national agency responsible for maritime safety, protection of the marine environment, and maritime and aviation search and rescue. We regulate vessel safety and seafarer qualifications, provide the infrastructure for safe navigation in Australian waters, and coordinate national search and rescue services. These outcomes are enabled by strong corporate, digital and specialist capabilities that support our operational work nationwide.

With around 500 employees across Australia, AMSA operates in a complex, highly regulated environment and offers meaningful careers with national reach and long-term impact. Learn more at amsa.gov.au.

About the Role

The role contributes primarily to the safe and effective delivery of AMSA responsibilities in search and rescue (SAR). It is part of a team of four that provide national coverage. It requires participation in audits, training, development, liaison both internally and externally, and accurate record-keeping. It will require frequent travel on SAR aircraft to audit crew SAR service delivery elements and to provide training in visual observation to volunteer air search observers and SAR techniques to SAR professionals. It will require aviation flight operations experience, a SAR or emergency service background, and completion of a HUET course. It involves reasonably frequent, short, but pre-planned travel.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • auditing standards and contractual compliance for our contracted aircraft and equipment
  • auditing opportunity aircraft operators across Western Australia and South Australia
  • training for air search observers in WA
  • supporting the development of SAR droppable equipment and the training of aircrew in its operational use
  • rotating on-call responsibilities and responding to occasional out of hours or short notice requests
  • participating as part of the broader team in the development of capability

What We're Looking For

You will bring:

  • Experience and understanding of flight operations, and maritime operations desirable.
  • Experience in training, assessing and/or auditing individual and organisational performance, ideally in an operational aviation environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain operational standards and training documentation.
  • Demonstrated communication/relationship and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to self-motivate and work independently.
  • Crew experience working in SAR, or other related aviation services is highly preferred.
  • Behaviours aligned with One AMSA values and ways of working.
