About the Role

As the Senior Surveyor - Flag State Control, you'll play a key role in supporting the safety, compliance and certification of Australian-flagged vessels.

Reporting to the Principal Marine Surveyor - Flag State, you'll provide specialist technical advice on ship safety, survey and certification matters, contributing to the delivery of Australia's Flag State obligations under domestic and international maritime frameworks. Working closely with internal stakeholders, Recognised Organisations and industry representatives, you'll support regulatory decision-making, certification activities and the ongoing development of maritime safety policy and guidance.

In this role you will:

• Provide specialist technical advice on Flag State inspection, survey and certification activities.
• Assess applications and contribute to decisions relating to statutory certification, approvals, exemptions, equivalences, waivers and other regulatory instruments for Australian-flagged vessels.
• Support compliance and enforcement activities associated with Australia's Flag State obligations.
• Coordinate and participate in audits of Recognised Organisations and contribute to AMSA's oversight of approved issuing bodies.
• Contribute to the development and review of ship safety policies, procedures, guidance material and legislative instruments.
• Prepare briefs, reports and technical advice for internal and external stakeholders.
• Represent AMSA at technical meetings, industry forums and stakeholder engagements where required.
• Monitor developments across the maritime sector and contribute to the implementation of international and domestic regulatory requirements.

What we're looking for

You will bring:

• A tertiary qualification in naval architecture, marine engineering, or equivalent qualifications in structural, electrical or mechanical engineering with marine applications.
• Extensive experience in the Australian maritime industry in a senior technical, survey, certification or regulatory role.
• Sound knowledge of ship statutory survey and certification requirements and their practical application.
• A strong understanding of relevant international conventions, domestic maritime legislation and regulatory frameworks.
• The ability to analyse complex technical information and provide sound, evidence-based advice and recommendations.
• Strong written communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports, briefs and correspondence.
• Well-developed stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to work collaboratively with industry, recognised organisations and government stakeholders.
• Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
